Their progression into staple tools of our lives has not always been a smooth one however. Some people believe that their radio waves have harmful effects on the body and others believe that they are making children illiterate. However, what cannot be contested is the fact that mobile phones have helped connect people all over the world and in doing so made it a safer place

When mobile phones first came onto the market and were commercially viable for the masses, parents were faced with something of a dilemma. It was obvious that allowing children access to a mobile phone could be very beneficial in terms of staying in touch with them and finding out if they are OK. That said, there was always the possibility that children with phones were more likely to be the victim of theft and additionally, parents were unable to completely control how their children used their phones. After a couple of years it became obvious that the benefits far outweighed the risks, and soon every child in the developed world had their own phone on their Bedside tables.Further more, the risk of being a theft victim was dramatically reduced when service providers enabled people to block their phones if they had been stolen. Children could now report in with their parents, phone for help if it were needed, and even warn others of potentially harm almost instantly.

Children are not the only ones to benefit from mobile phones in terms of safety. Millions of adults have also benefited from using their mobiles to get out of dangerous situations, from being able to call for help after an avalanche, to delivering a baby via guidance over the phone from a midwife. By allowing people to stay in contact with those close by or the other side of the world, many thousands of lives have been saved and much harm prevented. As they develop also, we will find new ways of using them to our advantage and their potential for good is almost limitless.
