One of the most pleasant tasks expectant parents face is planning and furnishing a nursery. There are so many options available in both furniture and decorating accessories that it is sometime difficult to make decisions. However, if you take the time to consider the possibilities before you make your first purchase, you will be more likely to be pleased with the results.

For those who plan to use vintage items from their own childhood or an older child, the first step is to examine what is available. Make a note of not only what you have but also the colors and patterns. For example, you might have a wall hanging of balloons in primary colors. Jot down the information so you can refer to it as needed. Then make a list of what is still needed.

It can be helpful to decide on a theme for the nursery, and there are a great many from which to choose. Many designers make every item from a bedding collection to a toy box with the same pattern. You can select from themes that include pirates, animals, butterflies, and fairies. However, you do not have to make every item in the nursery from the same collection. You can mix in some solid colors as well to add more interest to the room.

The crib is typically the focal point of the nursery. When you are evaluating baby cribs, you might wish to consider those that can be changed into youth beds. This can sometimes make the crib more economical, since baby will soon be too old for it and need another bed anyway. Pay special attention to the mattress, making sure it does not leave gaps that could be hazardous to baby. If you have inherited an older crib, be sure it meets or exceeds safety recommendations, like the spacing between the bars.

Make sure that all fabric items purchased for the nursery are flame retardant. This can be a problem when you have inherited vintage items. In general, the recommended rule of thumb to follow is that if you are unsure, do not place the item in the nursery. The same holds true with sleepwear for the baby.

Layered window treatments are usually a good idea in a nursery. Baby will need to nap in the middle of the day, so it can be helpful to reduce the light in the room. While blackout curtains are not needed, a blind or shade that you easily adjust can be very handy. You can let in the light when it is time to play or bathe and dim it for sleep. Make sure any attached cords are placed well beyond grasp of your baby or toddler.

Select a solid changing table that is not prone to rocking. It needs to have attached safety straps that you should use to lessen the risk of falls. However, the straps alone cannot totally eliminate all falls if baby is left unattended. Many babies first turn over in secret, so never assume your child is not yet at that stage. Since you want to keep changing supplies handy, you might want to hang the diaper stacker on a nearby wall.

Before you know it, your new arrival will be ready for a loft bed, a homework desk, and a video game system. Since time flies so quickly, make room in the nursery for visitors to rock baby to sleep or just sit and watch him or her sleep. You will be happy that you did.

When all is said and done, there is really just one thing that is necessary for the nursery. A safe environment for your baby is the only aspect of the room that is absolutely critical. Everything else is optional, so you should feel free to create a nursery the way you want.

Personal Safety Benefits of Cell Phones

Love them or hate them, mobile (cell) phones are here to stay and more popular than ever. Their progression into staple tools of our lives has not always been a smooth one however. Some people believe that their radio waves have harmful effects on the body and others believe that they are making children illiterate. However, what cannot be contested is the fact that mobile phones have helped connect people all over the world and in doing so made it a safer place

When mobile phones first came onto the market and were commercially viable for the masses, parents were faced with something of a dilemma. It was obvious that allowing children access to a mobile phone could be very beneficial in terms of staying in touch with them and finding out if they are OK. That said, there was always the possibility that children with phones were more likely to be the victim of theft and additionally, parents were unable to completely control how their children used their phones. After a couple of years it became obvious that the benefits far outweighed the risks, and soon every child in the developed world had their own phone on their Bedside tables.Further more, the risk of being a theft victim was dramatically reduced when service providers enabled people to block their phones if they had been stolen. Children could now report in with their parents, phone for help if it were needed, and even warn others of potentially harm almost instantly.

Children are not the only ones to benefit from mobile phones in terms of safety. Millions of adults have also benefited from using their mobiles to get out of dangerous situations, from being able to call for help after an avalanche, to delivering a baby via guidance over the phone from a midwife. By allowing people to stay in contact with those close by or the other side of the world, many thousands of lives have been saved and much harm prevented. As they develop also, we will find new ways of using them to our advantage and their potential for good is almost limitless.
